About Us: Reasons to Choose Suthers & Harper

An individual in search of a law firm should ask, “what sets this law firm apart from other firms,” and “what has this law firm accomplished in cases similar to my case?” These are fair questions to ask, especially considering the number of lawyers who advertise their services on television and elsewhere. A catchy TV ad or slogan does not mean that a firm is capable of handling all types of personal injury and wrongful death cases. In fact, some advertising lawyers handle only relatively minor or simple personal injury cases that can be settled out of court quickly, and refer more complex and significant cases, such as those involving nursing home abuse and neglect, medical malpractice, defective products, and wrongful deaths, to firms that have the expertise and resources to pursue such cases.

Suthers & Harper focuses on litigation and trial of substantial, personal injury and wrongful death cases, including cases that involve complex legal, scientific and medical issues. Because medical negligence and defective product cases often cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to litigate and take to trial, many law firms cannot afford or are reluctant to spend large sums of money to go after the wrongdoers. Suthers & Harper has the expertise and financial resources to go after corporations who manufactured, marketed and sold dangerous pharmaceutical drugs, defective medical devices, and other products that caused serious and life-altering injuries. We have a reputation for successfully handling large cases that involve complex issues of law, engineering and medicine, which sets us apart from other law firms. In addition to our attorneys and support staff, the firm utilizes experts in various fields and other law firms throughout the United States, when necessary, to assist us in specialized areas of practice. Suthers & Harper devotes whatever time and resources that are necessary to maximize our clients’ recoveries.

Founder and Managing Partner, John E. Suthers, has been a trial lawyer for 38 years. Mr. Suthers was among the first attorneys in the United States willing to fight for victims of abuse and neglect in nursing homes at a time when other law firms refused to accept such cases. In the 1990s, most law firms were reluctant to pursue cases on behalf of injury victims who were elderly and had pre-existing medical conditions. These factors did not discourage Suthers & Harper from filing one of the first lawsuits in the State of Georgia against a nursing home, and holding that nursing home accountable by obtaining a successful jury verdict. The firm remains passionate about and committed to protecting the elderly from abuse and neglect in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and personal care homes. The victims of such abuse and neglect are often individuals who served in the military and fought for our country, built or worked in factories and industries in our communities, and raised children who went on to become productive citizens. As these individuals age and experience various illnesses and infirmities, they become some of the most vulnerable members of society. Suthers & Harper has spent the past 25 years pursuing justice for these individuals and their families and, at the same time, seeking to improve care for other residents in long-term care facilities.

Our firm has also been involved in hundreds of cases against corporate manufacturers of defective products, including products that contained toxic materials like asbestos, recalled drugs and medical devices. We have recently litigated and obtained recoveries for individuals who were surgically implanted with metal-on-metal hip replacement products and women who were surgically implanted with transvaginal mesh materials. We are currently investigating cases on behalf of patients who were surgically implanted with certain hernia mesh products, and have suffered injuries as a result of the mesh degrading. We bring the same dedication and passion to these areas of practice as we brought to the nursing home litigation.

The attorneys at Suthers & Harper are frequently associated by other lawyers and law firms across the United States to assist those firms in specialized and complex litigation matters. In addition to representing individuals in cases pending throughout the States of Georgia and South Carolina, the firm’s attorneys have appeared and assisted other lawyers and law firms in cases in Alabama, California, Florida, Maine, Minnesota, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia. Although our offices are located in the beautiful, historic city of Savannah, Georgia, we routinely represent clients who reside in cities and towns all across Georgia, South Carolina, and elsewhere. We recognize that it is sometimes difficult for injury victims and their family members to come to our offices, so we will be happy to speak with you by telephone and meet with you at your home or whatever location that is most convenient for you to discuss your case. There is no charge for such consultations.

Mr. Suthers was a Southern gentleman of highest quality. He was kind and thoughtful when I needed it most. He worked with the funeral home and was able to push my paperwork through the courts and get me out of GA when I needed too. I sing his praises then and now.
